So what is ferrocerium? It’s a modern metal alloy designed to produce very hot, abundant sparks when scraped with a steel striker. This makes it faster and more reliable than natural flint, even in wet or harsh conditions.
Ferrocerium is far more efficient than flint, even though flint was widely used in ancient times to start fires. Both work on a similar principle, but ferrocerium performs much better.

Features
One of the main features of this fire starter is that producing sparks is relatively easy, though it does take some technique. To use it, firmly hold the ferro rod and scrape it with the striker at the right angle and with steady pressure.
When you do, it throws sparks that can reach temperatures up to 3,000 °C (5,500 °F), making ignition possible even in damp weather. To turn those sparks into flame in an emergency, you’ll need tinder or another highly flammable material.
It can even work in the rain, which makes it highly reliable and efficient. Beyond extreme survival scenarios like you see on TV, it’s also great for lighting a gas stove. That comes in handy if you ever forget your matches or just want to impress your family.
